The Potential Role of Radionuclide Imaging in Osteoporotic Vertebral Fracture and Sacral Fracture

چکیده
Vertebral fractures (VF) and sacral insufficiency fractures (SIFs) are very common in osteoporotic patients with low-back pain and are often overlooked in clinical practice. Plain radiography is usually the first examination. However, on many occasions, further evaluation with CT scan, MRI and nuclear medicine studies is necessary. Nuclear medicine examinations have important applications for the detection and timing of fractures and prediction of response to therapy. Bone scan is a simple study for the evaluation of osteoporotic patients with low-back pain to detect VF or SIFs, to identify an alternative diagnosis, to assess the age of fracture, and to predict the response to vertebroplasty. Bone scan is also helpful to detect other foci of insufficiency fractures, or other co-existent disease in the rest of the total body. Other radionuclide studies such as 67Ga, 99mTc-MIBI, and 18F-FDG PETCT are also useful to diagnose co-existent diseases or other alternative conditions such as osteomyelitis or primary and metastatic bone diseases. The purpose of this article is to review the potential role of nuclear medicine studies in osteoporotic vertebral fractures and sacral fractures.

Sacral insufficiency fracture diagnosed after vertebroplasty for L2 and L3 compression fractures: a case report.
Vertebroplasty for osteoporotic thoracolumbar vertebral compression fractures usually results in complete and immediate cessation of pain symptoms. Occasionally the procedure does not relieve pain and further intervention is required. We herein report the case of a 62-year-old female with L2 and L3 vertebral compression fractures treated with vertebroplasty. Her symptoms did not improve and sub...

Background: Osteoporotic compression vertebral fractures are common clinical problems. In those with refractory fractures, percutaneous cement augmentation has been suggested. The aim of this study was to evaluate the functional outcome of percutaneous vertebroplasty in Iranian patients with refractory osteoporotic fractures. Methods: We retrospectively studied 37 osteoporotic fractures in 28 p...

STUDY DESIGN Case control study. PURPOSE To examine the effect of spino-pelvic sagittal parameters and back muscles on osteoporotic vertebral fracture. OVERVIEW OF LITERATURE Low bone mass is not the only important component of the risk on osteoporotic vertebral fracture; many other risk factors also contribute to skeletal fragility. METHODS Seventy-two patients who had a lateral radiogra...

Sacral insufficiency fractures (SIFs) are easily neglected by clinical physicians. The incidence of SIFs remains unclear in patients with symptomatic osteoporotic compression fractures of the lumbar-sacral area. This retrospective study was conducted by reviewing the medical records and radiological reports and by reading magnetic resonance (MR) images from August 2013 to July 2016.We identifie...
متن کاملCan anti-osteoporotic therapy reduce adjacent fracture in magnetic resonance imaging-proven acute osteoporotic vertebral fractures?
BACKGROUND Adjacent fracture of the cemented vertebrae result from crushed fragile trabeculae during follow-up, suggesting impaired bone marrow integrity. This study aimed to determine if anti-osteoporotic therapy can decrease the risk of adjacent fracture in patients after vertebroplasty. METHODS This retrospective study reviewed of cases of osteoporotic patients with magnetic resonance imag...
